I truly loved the summers of my youth. Just remembering those days brings a smile to my face. I ran barefooted in the soft grass, laughing and chasing the best friends anyone could ever ask for. I leapt in the air, grasping at the soft glow of a firefly just out of reach. Sitting on a porch swing reading a book of swashbuckling adventure, or a mystery only a brilliant detective could solve. And then there was the fair.

Every year the county fair rolled into my sleepy little town. The long days of summer were getting shorter when they began erecting the giant rides. The Ferris wheel, carousel, tilt-a-whirl, and fun house, sprung up almost overnight. We would plan out every move we would make at the fair so as not to miss one fantastic moment. We could smell mix of sweet aromas of the fair before we even parked our bikes. There was sweet brown sugar and vanilla from the pies and cookies from the baking contest. Caramel, oh the buttery rich caramel, drizzled over popcorn and covering crisp apples. Flowers from the local botany club perfumed the air.

The rides were amazing! Each one a blur of motion, laughter and joy. Looking back some of the detail is lost…until one of those familiar scents roll in, and I’m there all over again.
